Dan Scogin, remembered
Writing this post brings me both great sadness and great joy. I was contacted by Dan Scogin’s daughters this past week and informed about his passing. I have not been in touch with Dan, since the premiere of Elvis’ Grave in 1990. So, it came as a surprise when they informed me that Dan passed away in 2003. But for me, it was 11/15/2006 11:33 AM, the exact time I received an email with Kim Traylor’s post to this blog. Kim is one of Dan’s daughters. She was also writing, to see if I might have any pictures of Dan from the set of Elvis’ Grave and to thank me for immortalizing him on the cover of the DVD. There is no need to thank me, because I think the world of Dan Scogin. He was one of the coolest people to work on EG. He was quiet and humble and the perfect person to add mystery to the shadowy Elvis-like figure lurking through the background of the film. Not only did he make the cover of the DVD, but he is the last image in a freeze frame at the end of the film and gets the credit: Dan Scogin as Dan Scogin, because he was just that… Dan Scogin. I could say so much more and tell several happy stories about working with Dan, but I’ll save that until another time (maybe in a tell all book about the making of Elvis’ Grave). Now, I just want to say thanks to Kim and Caprice for their kind words, their brother Chris for his support and their mom for her kind words. And to Dan, I’m glad I met you… say hey to the King and to Shockin’ Annie! May you rest in peace.
